AVCHD(Advanced Video Coding High Definition) has been widely used by almost all major brand HD camcorders. AVCHD was first developed by Sony and Panasonic in 2006 for their high definition camcorders. As AVCHD hits the market, other HD camcorder players such as Canon and JVC also followed this trend and released their AVCHD camcorders. Camcorders using AVCHD mainly record videos in mts extension, and after they are imported to your computer, they will be m2ts files.

AVCHD records video at various resolutions including 1080p, 1080i and 720p. Most AVCHD camcorders that advertise themselves as "Full HD" models will record HD video at a resolution of 1080i.

AVCHD allows a nice range of recording media including hard disc drives, DVD discs, removable flash media such as SD/SDHC memory cards, and Memory Stick cards.

AVCHD video can directly burned to a blank Blu-ray disc. You can also output AVCHD to a TV using component outputs or an HDMI cable. And of course, you can directly view AVCHD videos on your computer.

Another benefit of AVCHD is the ability to burn high definition video to a standard DVD disc and the burned standard DVD disc can be played with a Blu-ray disc player, so you can view your high definition videos on an HDTV without a Blu-ray disc burner.

AVCHD and Blu-ray Players

AVCHD is compatible with most Blu-ray players. And of course, Sony and Panasonic Blu-ray players come first since they developed AVCHD, in particular, Sony BDP-S1, Sony BDP-S300, Sony BD507, the Panasonic DMP-BD10, the Panasonic DMP-BD30K, the Panasonic DMP-BD35, the Panasonic DMP-BD60K, the Panasonic DMP-BD80K, and the Playstation 3 etc. can all play AVCHD discs, while other manufacturers do not always provide reliable AVCHD compatibility.

Apart from playing back AVCHD discs, some Panasonic and JVC Blu-Ray Disc players also supports AVCHD playback from SDHC memory cards.

Popular HD camcorders using AVCHD

AVCHD is already used by most HD camcorder players such as Sony, Panasonic, Canon, JVC and Hitachi etc. So if you buy any of these brand, what you get will most likely to be an AVCHD camcorder. On Amazon, the most popular AVCHD camcorders include:
