Play/Convert MKV files to Galaxy Nexus in 1080p

"Hi, Does anyone know if the phone natively plays mkv files? I tried a couple and it didn't work. I am wondering if it was the files I tried or the phone itself? If the native player cannot play them, does anyone know if there is an alternative player that can?
