How to make WD TV Live play MOD files

MOD to WD TV Live problem:
I'm about to purchase an SD digital video camera and I had narrowed the choice down to the Panasonic SDR-S50 and the JVC Everio GZ-MS120.
The only thing is that they both apparently record their video files in the ".MOD" file extension format, and I can't see that mentioned as a supported format on the WD TV Live specs.
My plan is to transfer these movies onto a My Passport AV external hard drive and connect it to the WD TV Live.
I'd hate to buy a camera only to find out that this format is not supported.
Can someone please advise if .MOD files can be played on the WD TV Live?

Step1: Import camera MOD video
